Rare Spanish Colonial Santos Monk Statue Carved Wood Franciscan 16th C
This is an exceptional early Spanish Colonial Santos figure, carved between the late 1500s and early 1600s, depicting a Franciscan monk or St. Francis in a deeply contemplative pose. Carved from a single piece of early colonial hardwood, the figure displays the primitive but powerful stylistic traits associated with the first two centuries of Spanish mission art in the New World.
The statue shows the classic elements of early Franciscan carving: symbolic vertical robe folds, the knotted cord (cintura franciscana), elongated ascetic form, and the early-style swirling carved hair pattern found on 16th-17th century devotional figures. The surface has completely oxidized, exhibiting centuries of natural lignin loss, deep fissuring, and stable age cracks consistent with 400+ years of age.
Woodworm exit holes are long-dormant and fully patinated, confirming historical rather than recent insect activity. The sculpture is mounted to a custom-fitted stand made specifically for this piece, likely prepared for estate display or scholarly preservation.
This Santos figure comes from the estate of Judge Jacob Tysen, a 19th-century New York jurist known for collecting early American and colonial artifacts. The provenance strongly supports the antiquity of the carving, as it was already regarded as an old devotional object during the mid-1800s.
