Pair of Chinese Carved Alabaster Lamps With Birds and Dragons
A finely matched pair of mid-20th-century Chinese carved alabaster table lamps, hand-shaped in the form of archaic ritual wine vessels (fang hu). Each lamp features phoenix bird handles and incised taotie dragon masks on all four sides—motifs derived from ancient Shang- and Zhou-dynasty bronzes.
The warm honey-to-amber veining of the alabaster creates a soft translucence when lit, accentuating the intricate carved scrollwork. Each rests on a tiered rosewood base, professionally wired for U.S. current with brass fittings. Subtle variations between the two (as seen in the lids) indicate hand finishing rather than mold replication, enhancing authenticity and charm.
