Large 1800s Satsuma Kinkozan Vase – Gilt Dragons, Phoenix, Roses, Heavy Enamel
Stunning early-mid 20th century Japanese Satsuma-style vase featuring richly detailed moriage enamel, vivid dragons, phoenix motifs, and hand-painted peony panels. The piece displays exceptional craftsmanship with raised gilt decoration, vibrant Kutani-influenced colors, and finely crackled glaze typical of Kyoto studio work from the 1920s-1970s period.
The vase is decorated in alternating panels:
• Full relief golden dragons swirling through clouds
• Floral cartouches with hand-painted peonies and butterflies
• Phoenix (Hō-ō) and cloud scrollwork in dense polychrome enamel
• Moriage beading and textured surface throughout
• Figural dragon handles applied at the shoulders
The underside bears a Japanese mark reading "Japan / Nippon origin characters", consistent with early Shōwa export production. The heavy craquelure and enamel layering indicate a quality studio piece rather than later mass-market ware.
This is a large, impressive display vase with deep color saturation and excellent presence. No structural cracks noted; expected age-related crazing and enamel wear in areas.
A striking collector's example of Japanese moriage enamel work—perfect for Asian décor, Satsuma collectors, or statement interior design.
