Antique Double-Sided Chinese Carved Jade Plaque Pendant,
This substantial double-sided carved jade plaque pendant is an early Chinese work, hand-carved in high relief and showcasing natural bi-color jade with exceptional depth and presence.
🔸 Jade Plaque (Primary Object)
The plaque is carved from solid jade, displaying a rich deep green face contrasted by a russet-brown to olive reverse, a natural coloration prized by traditional carvers who worked with — rather than against — the stone's mineral zoning.
Both sides are fully carved, not flat-backed,
featuring flowing cloud scrolls, auspicious motifs, and symbolic imagery rendered with softened contours and organic irregularity, consistent with hand-tool carving rather than modern machine production.
Surface wear, polish loss in recessed areas, and gentle edge rounding indicate authentic age and long-term handling, not artificial distressing.
🔸 Age & Origin
Based on carving style, material thickness, polish, and natural coloration, the jade plaque itself is consistent with late Qing to early Republic period Chinese workmanship (circa 1880-1930).
The pendant has been later mounted as a necklace, a common and accepted practice, allowing an earlier jade carving to be worn and preserved.
🔸 Necklace Components
Traditional-style corded stringing (later)
Pale green jade beads
Decorative cloisonné enamel accent beads with floral motifs
These elements complement the plaque but are not original to its period, and are disclosed as later additions.
🔸 Size & Presence
This is a large, thick plaque with notable weight, intended as a statement piece or collectible object. Its substantial form reflects older carving traditions, when material economy was secondary to symbolism and durability.
🔸 Condition
Very good antique condition. Natural inclusions and surface variations consistent with genuine jade. Wear is appropriate and adds character.
A rare and compelling example of early Chinese carved jade, combining historic craftsmanship with timeless visual impact.
