Chinese Export Porcelain Pendant with Scholar Figure

China, mid-20th century (circa 1940s-1950s)

Hand-painted porcelain with sterling silver (925) mount.

This pendant features a finely hand-painted porcelain plaque depicting a traditional Chinese scholar or Daoist immortal, rendered in a classical literati style. The figure is shown in three-quarter profile, carrying an offering vessel, with flowing robes executed in soft washes of lavender, celadon green, and iron-red accents. Expressive brushwork and calligraphic line define the facial features and garments, reflecting long-standing Chinese painting conventions adapted for decorative arts.

The porcelain plaque is set within a sterling silver (925) bezel mount, characteristic of Chinese export jewelry produced for Western markets during the mid-20th century. The reverse is finished in plain white glaze, consistent with authentic porcelain plaques of this period intended for mounting rather than standalone display.

Such pieces reflect the continued transmission of traditional Chinese iconography—symbolizing wisdom, longevity, and moral cultivation—into wearable art forms during the Republic and early People's Republic era. Combining fine porcelain painting with precious metal craftsmanship, this pendant exemplifies the intersection of classical imagery and modern export production.

Condition: Very good vintage condition, with minor age-appropriate wear to the silver mount.

Materials: Hand-painted porcelain; sterling silver (marked 925).
