Antique Meiji Japanese Satsuma Mokko-gata Moriage Scenic Bowl Cobalt 4”
A striking mokko-gata (quatrefoil) Japanese Satsuma bowl from the late Meiji period (c. 1890-1910). The deep cobalt blue exterior is lavishly adorned with raised moriage cherry blossoms in enamel and gold, each bloom outlined with precision gilding that catches the light beautifully.
Inside, a finely detailed hand-painted landscape unfolds—pagodas, river, mountains, and drifting gold clouds—set against Satsuma's signature ivory crackle glaze. The miniature scale of this painting, combined with the elegant lobed rim, makes this a true cabinet display piece rather than an everyday bowl.
The rare mokko form, extensive gilt work, and dimensional enamel decoration place this well above the average Satsuma examples commonly found. A red square cartouche mark appears on the base.
Measurements: approx. 4" wide × 2" high
Condition: excellent antique condition with light, age-appropriate wear to gilding; no chips or cracks observed.
A beautiful and highly decorative example of Meiji Satsuma that displays exceptionally well and appeals strongly to collectors of fine Japanese ceramics.
