Antique Chinese 14" Famille Verte Phoenix & Peony Vase, Guangxu Era Style
A refined antique Chinese Famille Verte porcelain vase, standing 14 inches tall, decorated in vivid enamels with phoenix (fenghuang) among peony blossoms, bamboo and scholar's rocks. The palette — rich in emerald green, cinnabar red, cobalt blue and soft yellow — is beautifully outlined in fine black linework with hand stippling, a hallmark of Late Qing to Early Republic period export kilns (circa 1900-1920).
This vase reflects the stylistic spirit of the Guangxu Emperor's reign (1875-1908), continued into the early Republic of China period, when workshops in Guangdong/Canton produced elegant porcelain for Western collectors while honoring imperial motifs. The base bears a four-character apocryphal reign-style mark, a traditional tribute to earlier Kangxi / Qianlong imperial porcelains.
The phoenix and peony pairing symbolizes prosperity, beauty, and noble virtue, while the bamboo and rock elements reference longevity and scholarly resilience — reflecting auspicious wishes encoded into decorative arts of the time.
